JOIN USTwenty five-year-old Pelézinho is a well-known name in the field of B-boying. Hailing from Brazil, he has been breakdancing since he was 13, Pelézinho is now a professional dancer, performing in videos, commercials, shows and theatre productions.
Recently in the city to judge the ‘Red Bull BC One India Cypher’, held for the first time ever here, the dancing star talks to Rajitha Menon about dance, dance and more dance.
How did you take to this field?
I started B-boying in 1996. I attended this cypher (it’s kind of a party where people gather around the dancers) that a friend was part of. I was impressed by the dance form; in fact, I loved the style. I asked him if I could come practice some moves and that’s where it all started. I’ve never looked back since.
Describe your dancing style...
My style is inspired by elements of the ‘ginga’ approach of Brazilian dance and attitude, which is acrobatic and powerful. ‘Ginga’ is an almost indefinable, mystical quality of movement and attitude, possessed by Brazilians, and evident in everything they do. I also mix techniques learned from capoeira and samba.
Has the B-boying scene changed over the years?
I am seeing basics evolving into different, cool and creative new moves. It keeps on adding, there’s no end to it. The B-boying culture has different people with various moves and creative minds, so it keeps evolving.
Another dance form that you really admire?
I really like locking. It requires a lot of energy and if I wasn’t a B-boy I would have chosen that.
A memorable incident during your journey so far?
When I was placed fourth at the Red Bull BC One in 2005 in Berlin. It was my first time outside Brazil and the first time I entered the top 16 at a global competition.

I really love to come to India and I love the culture, history and the people. I have a great connection with
Indians and I get a lot of respect here.
