Even as her son was watching cartoon on television in the living room, a 32-year-old woman hanged herself inside a room in east Delhi’s Geeta Colony on Friday.

Her family has alleged that the woman’s husband had been physically and mentally torturing her for money and had shown her the door when she could provide no more.

The accused husband Akhilesh Aggarwal was arrested on Saturday after the woman’s parents produced photographs of a purportedly bashed up victim. It was the second marriage for the husband and wife. They have a son each from their previous marriages and a 14-month-old daughter with each other.

Varsha and Akhilesh were married in February 2013. Varsha worked as a lower division clerk with the Tis Hazari Court in Delhi while Akhilesh was looking out for a job.

Allegations by family
Varsha’s family alleged that her husband showed interest only in her money and would physically abuse her whenever the flow slowed down.

“Akhilesh forced her out of their rented accommodation in Dilshad Colony one-and-a-half months ago. Since then she was staying with her parents in Geeta Colony,” Varsha’s maternal uncle Sunil told Deccan Herald.

At about 3 pm on Friday, her father Om Prakash and mother Veena Rani left for a nearby locality to attend a relative’s last rites. Prakash returned home soon and sat down besides Varsha’s seven-year-old son who was watching television.

“When Varsha did not emerge from her room for long, Prakash went to check and found the door locked from inside. When repeated knocks did not yield any response, he called out to his neighbours who broke open the door. Varsha was found hanging from the ceiling fan using her chunni,” said Sunil.

Police were called and the body sent to a hospital where Varsha was declared brought dead. An autopsy has been conducted and body handed over to the family. Since the couple was married for less than seven years, a sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) has been handed over the case.

The victim’s family alleged that she had been suffering from depression because of her failed second marriage. Though her parents had advised her to approach police to complain about the alleged beating by Akhilesh, she had told them that she would try to bring her married life back on track.
