A married woman was burnt alive by two youths at a vegetable market at Pragati Nagar of Nippani town in Chikodi taluk of Belagavi district in broad daylight on Wednesday.

The victim breathed her last in the presence of onlookers, pleading for help, while the accused fled on a motorcycle.

The deceased is Rajashree Sunil Khot, 35, a resident of Kagal town in Kolhapur district of neighbouring Maharashtra. The accused are Babasaheb Laxman Hadikar (24) and Ramdas Khot (26).

Police said, Rajashree had come to Nippani and was seen talking with the two suspects in the market for long. An argument ensued between them and the youths reportedly poured kerosene on her, set her on fire and fled.

Police found two pictures and a cellphone in the woman’s purse. One of the pictures was hers and the person in the other would be identified after the family members arrive.

Hadikar, from Kognoli village in the taluk, had an illicit relationship with Rajashree. He, along with one Khot, a resident of Kagal in Kolhapur, was running a hotel in Nippani. The suspects were arrested in the evening.
