Foreign secretaries of India, Pak to meet today

India and Pakistan may explore some additional Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) on Tuesday, when the foreign secretaries of the two countries meet in Islamabad.

Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar will reach Islamabad on Tuesday and hold talks with his Pakistani counterpart Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry. Though Jaishankar’s visit to Islamabad is part of the “Saarc Yatra” he embarked upon last Sunday, the two diplomats are expected to discuss bilateral issues. They will explore resumption of bilateral engagement, which remained stalled since January 2013.

Sources told Deccan Herald that Jaishankar and Chaudhry would explore additional CBMs, although New Delhi would ask Islamabad to strictly adhere to the existing ones.

The foreign secretary, however, would convey to his Pakistani counterpart that New Delhi perceived the ceasefire along the Line of Control as the most important among the existing CBMs between the two nations and Islamabad should ensure that its soldiers did not flout the truce. The top diplomats of India and Pakistan are also likely to discuss implementation of the agreement New Delhi and Islamabad reached in 2012 to liberalise the bilateral visa regime.
