Funds to transport dept cut

Last Updated 13 March 2015, 20:17 IST

No new scheme for the transport department or revision in motor vehicle taxes has been announced in the State Budget for 2015-16. On the contrary, allocation to the department has actually be reduced by Rs 200 crore compared to the current financial year.

The department has been allocated a total of Rs 1,208 crore for the financial year 2015-16, down from Rs 1,408 crore in 2014-15.

But Transport Commissioner Ramegowda insisted that reduced funds would not be a hindrance to completion of ongoing projects or launches new ones.

The government subsidy for student bus passes issued by the Bangalore Metro Transport Corporation (BMTC) has gone up from Rs 159 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 189 crore in 2015-16. But BMTC officials said since the cost of bus passes had been increased in the past, the increase in subsidy won’t make much of a difference.
