JOIN USThe 71-year-old nun who was raped by a gang of bandits in West Bengal's Nadia district continues to be physically and mentally stable, an attending doctor said on Tuesday.
"Her condition, both physically and mentally, is stable now. She is responding to treatment," Payal Mullick Laha, additional superintendent of the Ranaghat sub-divisional hospital, said.
Confirming that the sister superior of the Convent of Jesus and Mary High School in Ranaghat was sexually assaulted, Laha said reports of medical examination conducted to ascertain rape were still awaited.
The incident has attracted widespread condemnation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi too expressing concern and seeking a report.
Meanwhile, Archbishop of Calcutta Thomas D'Souza dismissed reports that a delegation from the Vatican will be coming to India to meet the rape survivor.
"We don't have any information if such a delegation is arriving. Normally such a visit is organised in consultation with us," said D'Souza.
The Archbishop said the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) president Cardinal Baselios Cleemis will be visiting Ranaghat to meet the rape survivor on Wednesday.
"The CBCI president is extremely concerned over the Ranaghat incident. Cardinal Baselios Cleemis will be meeting the sister on Wednesday."
While the police have detained 10 people, their failure to arrest the culprits has created widespread resentment with scores of protestors blocking the convoy of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who went to Ranaghat to meet the survivor.
The demonstrators demanded a CBI probe into the matter, drawing angry reactions from Banerjee. She blamed the opposition, including the BJP, for politicising the incident.
