SC seeks reply from lawyers over BBC docu

Last Updated 24 March 2015, 20:48 IST

The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought response from two advocates of the December 16 Delhi gang-rape case accused on a plea by the SC Women Lawyers Association.

The women’s body is seeking restriction of duo's entry in the top court's premises in view of their “outrageous” comments in the controversial BBC documentary 'India's Daughter'.

A bench of Justice V Gopala Gowda and C Nagappan issued notice to advocates M L Sharma and A P Singh seeking their reply within two weeks on a petition filed by Mahalakshmi Pavani, on behalf of the SC Women Lawyers' Association.

“We have heard the argument, pleadings and grievances urged in the petition. The matter requires consideration in view of the factual and legal submissions,” the bench said.

Senior advocate Vibha Datta Makhija, appearing for the association, submitted that the Supreme Court has to lead from the front and show zero tolerance for such views. “We need an environment where we are fearless,” she said.
