Youth kills self at UP secretariat

Team India’s humiliating loss at the World Cup Cricket semifinal in Sydney not only broke millions of hearts but also claimed a life here.

According to the police, a 30-year-old youth killed himself by jumping from the seventh floor of the state secretariat building here a few deliveries before the match ended.

The youth, Umesh Kumar, an employee in the state irrigation department, was watching the match at his office in “Bapu Bhavan” (secretariat building).

“Kumar suddenly went out of the room immediately after Mahendra Singh Dhoni was out and few seconds later his body was found lying on the ground floor in a pool of blood,” said an eye witness.

Kumar’s friends said that he was an avid cricket fan.

“He looked upset after loss of wickets at regular intervals,” they added.
A senior police official here also said that they were investigating the case from this angle as well.

“It (suicide after loss in the match) cannot be ruled out,” said the official.

In Kanpur, cricket fans burnt effigies of Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma after the match.
Hundreds of angry fans came on to the streets and burnt pictures of the duo.

In several areas, fans also reportedly broke their TV sets and threw them on to the streets after India’s loss. Elsewhere, fans raised anti-Team India slogans.
