Six-year-old Mohan had absolutely no idea that stealing a few hundred grams of rice to buy toffees could irk his mother so much that she would beat him to death.

In a shocking incident, a woman allegedly beat her only son to death in Uttar Pradesh village, about 250 km from here, for stealing 200 grams of rice and buying a few toffees from the village shop.

Geeta Devi, who too was in a state of shock after the death of her only son, has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sent to jail.

The incident occurred at Bhura village in the district on Tuesday evening. The matter came to light on Wednesday when the doctor, who was approached by Geeta Devi after her son collapsed following the thrashing, informed the locals about the incident, according to the reports.

Police sources here said that Mohan had stolen some rice from the house and bartered it for a few toffees. Geeta Devi was furious and she tied the child to the grill of the window and thrashed him with a stick after locking the door from
inside.

The kid's cries to spare him fell on deaf ears and within a few minutes he collapsed.
Geeta's husband, Gendan Lal, was away when the incident occurred.

Geeta took the child to a local doctor after a few hours. “I had never imagined that Mohan would die. I thought he would get up and come running to me again,” a weeping Geeta told the cops.

Gendan Lal lodged a report with the cops after which she was arrested, the police said. “We had paid obeisance at many a temples and undertaken many rituals to have a son,” he said.
