An 18-year-old boy sustained serious burns after he accidentally touched a live electric wire in Karawal Nagar on Thursday. He will end up losing two toes  in surgery next week.

Angered by the incident, the boy’s family blocked traffic for hours in the area and demanded action against power distribution company BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL).

Vishal Singh lives with family at Ankur Enclave in Karawal Nagar. He is a Class 11 student of Government Boys School in Mukund Vihar.

In his statement, Vishal told police that he had gone to a shop in nearby Prem Vihar when he came in contact with the wire which had snapped and was hanging dangerously low. The incident occurred at around 10 am when Vishal was there to buy engine oil .

“Vishal collapsed on coming contact with the wire and sustained serious burns. Locals heard him scream and rushed to find him unconscious,” Vishal’s father Bhagwan said.

Vishal was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where he underwent treatement and was discharged.

It is alleged that BYPL had been informed about the unattended wire on Thursday morning. “Three complaints had been made to BYPL office, but no action was taken. The incident would have been prevented if the staff had cut electricity in the area,” Bhagwan added.

Vishal lives with father, mother, two sisters and a brother. Currently, his family was struggling to afford medicines treatment. “Doctors have also informed that they will have to cut two toes of Vishal’s right leg,” Bhagwan said.

A case under sections 285 (negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC was registered over Vishal’s statement with Karawal Nagar police station.

Police have questioned some staff of BYPL, but no arrest has been made so far. When contacted by Deccan Herald, a BYPL spokesperson said: “We are investigating the case and will take action to ensure that such incidents are not repeated. We are  extending all help to the injured person”.
