Fancy registration numbers fetch Rs 10L

Last Updated 25 May 2015, 19:01 IST

After failing to get a good response to the first auction of fancy registration numbers through box bidding system, the Transport Department has now adopted open auction system to attract the public.

At the first auction through open bidding held last week for the series KA 41 MB, the department netted Rs 10.11 lakh after auctioning nine fancy numbers. Besides the auction amount, it collected Rs 75,000 as registration fee from each of the nine successful bidders. It has now decided to hold the auction of 50 more fancy numbers from the new series KA 03 MX—pertaining to the Indiranagar RTO—on Tuesday at its Shanthinagar office.

Transport Commissioner Ramegowada admitted that response to the auction had been lukewarm so far but hoped it would get better. “The auction has brought in transparency. Anyone can buy the fancy number of their choice,” he told reporters here on Monday.

In the past, he went on, dealers would take fancy numbers and sell them to the public at higher price. Now that the auction system has been introduced, those interested can take the number directly from the department.

Another auction today
Those interested in taking part in Tuesday’s auction should get a demand draft of Rs 75,000 as registration fee by tomorrow noon.

They can then take part in the auction and bid for their favourite number from 50 numbers categorised as fancy numbers, including 0001, 0123, 1234, 111, 1000, 2222, etc.
