Garbage woes: It's the same all over

Last Updated 22 June 2015, 02:36 IST

It is not just the Avenue Road that is affected by garbage menace, many other streets too are raising a stink due to improper garbage collection.

M K Srinivas, a resident of 10th Cross, East Park Road, Malleswaram, said, "The Pourakarmikas have become irregular in collecting the waste. Sometimes, they collect the garbage and dump it at the corner of our street. This has led to  mosquito and dog menace."

Similarly, Pramanik, a resident of Gopalappa Layout, RT Nagar, said: “It is becoming difficult for us to step out of house due to the raising stink. It is not just our lane, the entire layout and neighbouring residential localities too were affected since last two weeks.”

Garbage woes were also raised by the residents of Kurubarahalli, Indiranagar 16 ‘D’ Main, Kanakanagar at Hebbal, New BEL Layout among others.

Shekhar, a resident of Narayanapura, said the Pourakarmikas demand money for disposing of the garbage from their houses. “The houses on our street have been forced to give money to sanitation workers and each house is giving Rs 25,” he added.

Vijay K, a resident from Rajajinagar, pointed out that he had posted a complaint on BBMP’s Facebook page and also called helpline regarding the garbage problem at his area. However, they were of no use.

“Everyday, the BBMP vehicle comes and picks up the garbage from Mariyappanapalya. But within a few hours, a lot of garbage gets segregated in this place.”

Meanwhile, the residents of Mavallipura said that about eight to ten garbage trucks were entering the landfill site everyday for the past three months and there had been no problem in receiving the garbage.

“As per the High Court directions, only segregated wet waste has to be dumped at landfills. But we are getting mixed waste. Also, anti-mosquito spraying is not done regularly and the health check-ups are not effective," B Srinivas, a resident, said.
