Chips, Kurkure samples clear food safety test

Last Updated 23 June 2015, 03:58 IST

The chips and Kurkure samples which were lifted by the Delhi Food Safety department have been found to be safe, according to the test reports.

“The food analysis reports for packaged items like chips and Kurkure show that the products have passed the test. The samples collected for sampling did not show any abnormalities. The reports of the other prodcuts tested is currently being compiled,” said an official in the Food Safety Department.

“We were not too confident of these products. But the reports show they have cleared the test. The components are within the permissible limits,” the official said.

Chips and Kurkure were tested for a certain set of parameters as per the protocol of the food safety tests.

Most packaged food items came under scanner after the department found lead beyond permissible limits in Maggi packets. There was also the presence of Monosodium glutamate or MSG in the Maggi masala samples.

This comes under misbranding as the company is supposed to declare the presence of such tastemakers on the product. Samples of Chings and Top Ramen were also found to contain MSG without declaration.

The department had also lifted other food items like baby food, health food or nutraceuticals and  energy drinks last Monday.

With a shortage in milk products in summer, the department has turned its attention to milk products. All packaged milk items across brands were lifted for sampling by the department recently. In the summers, the milk products are found to sub-standard with high content of water. After controversy broke of the UP Food Department allegedly finding detergent in Mother Dairy milk packet, the department picked up milk samples of all major brands.

Currently, the department is receiving several complaints on milk products being of sub-standard qualities. However, while some complaints look genuine, a considerable chunk of complaints is “bogus”, said officials.
