His mother is a classical Odissi dancer and as a young boy, Shoumik Biswas travelled alongwith her. He says, “Maybe this is when I got introduced to beats; I enjoy the idea of beats.”

A student of Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology, Shoumik is a drummer and vocalist for the band ‘Space Behind the Yellow Room’. “I started the band in 2012 with one of my friends, Devasheesh Sharma, who plays the guitar,” he says.

It was during his school days in Kolkata that he ventured on to the path of being a vocalist. While in 11th grade, he was introduced to drums and became a part of the band ‘The Monkey In Me’. Eventually, after moving to Bengaluru, he and his like-minded friends started a band.

The three-year-old band has a lot to boast of as they have performed at various platforms including ‘NH7 Weekender’, ‘Control ALT Delete’ and a few gigs in Mumbai and Pune.

They also recently performed at ‘Music Matters Live’ in Singapore and he says, “It was a thrilling experience. Our band took part at the ‘MTV Pepsi Unbox’, a talent hunt show, where we were selected to  perform in Singapore. We played on the main stage at this music festival. We were given a chance to attend the festival conferences during the day and perform to a large audience at night. A four-day affair, we were introduced to a bunch of prominent people from the music industry.”
When asked about the genre of music he plays, he adds, “I do not bind myself to a particular genre. I play post-rock, space rock and post-metal to name a few.”

A self-taught drummer, he comments on the music scene in the City saying, “I have been playing at various platforms for the past four years now. The scene is definitely growing and there are a lot more opportunities available now for a musician when compared to earlier. Places like ‘The Humming Tree’ are providing the best of platforms for budding musicians.”

Ask him where he takes his inspirations from and he says, “It would be unfair to name just a few. I look up to a lot of musicians and it can be termed as varied inspirations.” Pursuing a film and graphic designing course, he wants to build a career in graphic designing.

He says, “I want to get a job as a graphic designer to support myself monetarily. This way, I can play music on my own terms. If I look at music as an option to make money, then I cannot explore it the way I would like to.”
