The high-profile by-elections to the R K Nagar Assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu, from where AIADMK supremo and Chief Minister J Jayalalitha is contesting, will take place on Saturday.

With more than 2.4 lakh voters expected to exercise their franchise, the Election Commission has introduced a new system called “Easy”.

Through the Electors Assistance System (Easy), voters can access details of the electoral roll, their polling station and also the polling booth’s key map enabling them to reach the spot.

For the first time, the commission has also implemented E-Netra system (Election Novel Electronic Tracking and Rapid Action System) for model code of conduct observance, expenditure monitoring and addressing of issues and complaints through a single window.

In addition, more than 100 high resolution Internet Protocol (IP) cameras have been installed at vital points in the constituency to monitor the polling booths.

Polling will be held in 230 booths and additional security forces were posted in sensitive booths. The counting of votes will take place on June 30.

The seat fell vacant after AIADMK’s sitting member P Vetrivel resigned to facilitate Jayalalitha’s re-election to the Assembly. Jayalalitha had assumed office as chief minister for the fifth time on May 23 after she was acquitted by the Karnataka High Court in a disproportionate assets case and she has to get elected to the Assembly within six months.
