Salman tweets contempt of court: Ujjwal Nikam

Last Updated 26 July 2015, 19:44 IST
Ujjwal Nikam, the Special Public Prosecutor who represented Mumbai police and the CBI in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, Said Salman Khan’s tweets supporting Yakub Memon is contempt of court and deserves action.

“What he said was contempt of court...he needs to withdraw it or he may have to face action,” Nikam said.

“He is a good actor. He has rights to express his opinion, (but) he has to take back his statement,” he said, adding that Salman has no right to speak in favour of Yakub Memon when the highest court has pronounced him guilty.

Veteran lawyer and Rajya Sabha member Majeed Memon said Salman should not have made the statements supporting the blasts case convict.  “Salman’s remarks are his personal opinion,” Majeed Memon, who represented the Memon family in the special TADA court, said.  “The government, administration and judiciary will not change its course because of his statement.....Salman may be a celebrity. It is just his individual opinion. The courts and the government do their work based on merits and demerits of the case and not on Salman's statement,” he added.

Postal services officer-turned-activist lawyer Abha Singh, who had filed pleas related to the hit-and-run case, said Salman has no right to speak on the issue.

“Salman Khan himself is a convict, whose appeal is in the Bombay High Court.  His statement is very improper, it is against the rule of law and he has no right to comment on this,” she said, adding that the actor has lied in the court and presented his driver to accept the charges.
