Patriotic moments

India’s independence was not a single-day phenomenon. It took over 100 years and the lives and sacrifices of many to attain this freedom. It is only because of those great personalities who never gave a second thought before forfeiting themselves for their motherland that we are in a position to celebrate the country’s 69 years of independence.

Celebrating the spirit of patriotism and paying tribute to those great souls, Nehru
Bal Sangh recently organised the event titled Jashn-e-Azadi held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Over 100 young artistes took to the stage to chronicle the journey of India’s freedom struggle, reminding us about the freedom fighters who put in their heart, soul and life in liberating the nation, through dance and music.

Choreographed by Santosh Nair, the hour-long performance highlighted the various emotions throughout the narration, from peace and serenity of the golden age to the pain and humiliation of suppression, from the passion of Independence to the enthusiasm of progress and concerns of the present. 

Bringing together all colours of Indian culture and diversity, the show started with a balancing act, emphasising on the need of balance in disruption that has befallen us. Spectacular aerial acrobatics by the artistes kept every eye glued to their every move. The inspiring stories of Mangal Pandey, Jhansi ki Rani, Bhagat Singh, and Chandra Shekhar Azad enacted on the stage enthralled the audience. The Jallianwala Bagh carnage and the incident at Kakori were recreated by the artistes,  leaving the audience emotionally charged.

The packed-auditorium reverberated with the sounds of applause when the artistes
reconstructed Gandhiji’s Dandi March, followed by Subhash Chandra Bose’s fight against the British. The audience was also taken back to the times of Jawaharlal
Nehru and Sardar Patel, who played an important role in shaping the fortunes of independent India.

Speaking on the occasion, Nair said, “Independence Day is a moment of pride and glory for every Indian. It’s like a

festival which should be celebrated with much gusto. With an aim to instil in oneself the various emotions reflecting the journey, we have presented Jashn-e-Azadi.”

Inaugurated by former Chief Minister of Delhi, Shiela Dikshit, the show kicked off the beginning of a week-long festival which will encompass various events at different
locations in the city.
