Last Updated 17 August 2015, 20:00 IST

The Southwest Monsoon made a big impact on Tamil Nadu reservoirs as the water level including in Mettur dam, Bhavanisagar and Mullaperiyar storage have increased substantially and the inflow continued to raise due to good rainfall in the catchment areas.

With the Tamil Nadu government already opening Stanley reservoir in Mettur, the lifeline of delta farmers last week for irrigation purpose, shutters of other dams including Bhavanisagar, Mullaperiyar and Vaigai were also opened both for drinking and agriculture purpose.

Stanley reservoir, continued to receive high inflow on Monday, taking water level to 91-feet mark compared to same period of previous year’s figure of about 80 feet.

“Due to heavy rain in Karnataka, the inflow in Mettur dam has increased in the last few weeks. It is expected to cross 100 feet in few days against its total capacity of 120 feet,” a senior official from PWD-Water Resources Organisation said here on Monday.

Most of the reservoirs located close to Western Ghats, including Vaigai, Sholayar and Aliyar are recording a good inflow.
