Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stole the limelight at the Vidhana Soudha on Thursday, when he took a ride in a Mercedes Benz car used by former chief minister, the late Devaraj Urs.

The chief minister took the ride after garlanding a portrait of Devaraj Urs on the occasion of his birth anniversary. Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya accompanied him.

Babu, who was a close associate of Urs, is currently the owner of the car. He attended the event at Vidhana Soudha.

Later speaking to reporters, the chief minister extolled Devaraj Urs for his commitment to the development of the backward classes.

“Urs is an inspiration for all those who believe in the concept of social justice and inclusive development. He has contributed immensely for the development of the State,” he said.

Urs took revolutionary steps such as land reforms, loan waiver of farmers and reservation for the backward classes. The State government has decided to celebrate his birth anniversary through the year, Siddaramaiah said.

Siddaramaiah rubbished BJP’s charge that the Congress had siphoned off Rs 5,000 crore in the last 15 years in the name of Bengaluru development by stating that it had no substance. “It’s an election gimmick. Their accusations have no substance”, he said.

To a query on BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa commenting on the Congress and its functioning, Siddaramaiah said, “He has no moral right to talk about the Congress. We need not take advice from people who have gone to jail.”
