Hurriyat's Mirwiaz gets Z-plus security

Last Updated 25 August 2015, 20:06 IST

The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to enhance the security of moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq following “increased threat perception”.

Sources said security wing of the Jammu and Kashmir Police has issued an order in this regard.  “The PDP-BJP government has decided that Z-category security status of Mirwiaz would be enhanced to Z-plus level in the wake of the increasing threat perception on his life,” they said and added a group of ministers from the PDP, enjoying good relation with the separatist leader, have convinced their counterparts from the BJP in this regard.

Mirwaiz is the only leader outside the mainstream who has the elaborate security.Apart from Mirwaiz, other leaders of moderate Hurriyat who enjoy security provided by the Centre include Abdul Gani Bhat, Abbas Ansari, Bilal Lone, Fazal Haq Qureshi and Shahid-ul-Islam.

Mirwaiz is being blessed with enhancement of security when he has been conspicuous for his chronic silence over waving of international terror organisation IS and Pakistani flags at his weekly rallies in the downtown here.

But interestingly while Mirwaiz hasn’t reacted to the waving of terror outfit flags, his arch rival and pro-Pakistan hawk Syed Ali Geelani has been vocal against the developments.

On June 12, after Mirwaiz delivered his weekly Friday sermon at Jamia Masjid, some masked youth waved IS flags. This hogged the headlines.
