61 Cavalry clinch Gyan Jyothi Cup

Last Updated 26 August 2015, 19:32 IST
61 Cavalry Polo Club (61 Cav) eased past Remount Veterinary Corps Polo Club (RVC) 6-3.5 to clinch the six-goal Gyan Jyoti tournament of the Bangalore Polo Season at Agram ground on Wednesday.

RVC held a 1.5-goal advantage at the start of the game as 61 Cav boasted of a handicap of plus four, which was superior to RVC’s plus two.

The cavalrymen began in fine fashion as Cdr Akhil Sirohi’s brilliant scoring form continued but Dfr Vijay Singh scored for RVC to ensure that his side retained their 1.5 goal advantage at the end of the first chukker.

There was a double blow to RVC in the second chukker, courtesy Capt Aman Singh and Maj Arjun Patil who gave 61 Cav a slender advantage with the scores at 3-2.5.

Both teams cancelled each other out through the majority of the third chukker but then Patil managed to grab his second of the game and increase his team’s advantage to 4-2.5. The veterinary corps, requiring two goals to go ahead, showed a little more intent in the fourth chukker with Vijay Singh getting on the scoresheet again.

But goals from Dfr Iliyas Ali and Aman Singh ensured that 61 Cav clinched the trophy with ease.

The final leg of the Bangalore Polo Season, the eight-goal Bangalore Polo Cup, will begin on Thursday with the final slated for Sunday.
