The BBMP on Saturday launched a drive to clear encroachment of the ventilation spaces at the KR Market Complex.

According to the  KR Market Traders’ Association, as many as 15 places earmarked for ventilation purposes have been illegally occupied by the vendors.  “On August 24, Palike Administrator T M Vijay Bhaskar instructed the Palike officials to annul the trade license of the vendors who have encroached upon the ventilation space,” said G M Diwakar, Association president.

The traders said that about ten minor accidents and five major fire accidents have taken place ever since market complex came up in the year 1998.

While Vijay Bhaskar was not available for comments, BBMP Deputy Commissioner for Markets S K Mathai said that the licenses of the traders ,who had encroached upon the space meant for fire exits and ventilation, have already been cancelled. The BBMP also cleared the encroachments of pedestrian path at the new KR Market Complex. The Palike workers cleared encroachemnt by traders inside the market which was hampering the pedestrian movement.
