Award has increased responsibility, say award-winning teachers

“I had not expected the award. The award has increased my responsibility,” said Bharathi Bai who is one of the two lecturers selected for State-Level Best Teacher award given to the lecturers of Government pre-university colleges in recognition of their meritorious and exemplary services.

Bharathi has been serving as a commerce lecturer at Carstreet Government PU College as commerce lecturer since 2011.  Balmatta Government PU College lecturer J P M Cherian is the other one selected for the award. “Changes are inevitable in education system. Students should be encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities alongside academics,” said Bharathi.

As the president of Dakshina Kannada District Commerce Lecturers Association, she has been conducting workshops for teachers alongside distributing cash prizes for the top scorers of second PU examination. Bharathi started her career in 1993 and had served in Karkala Venkatramana Women’s College and Karkala Government PU College.

Balmatta PU College Sociology lecturer J P M Cherian said he too had not expected the award. He had served in Indian airforce for 18 years and has been serving as the lecturer for the last 22 years.

After completing PU education at Subrahmanya college, he had obtained BA degree from Chandigarh University. Later, he completed MA from Kanpura University and BEd from Annamalai University. 

Having started his career as a lecturer in 1997, he has served in Kadaba Government PU College and Padmunja PU College in the past.

Cherian is also into social service. He has served as the national director of International Junior Chamber, International Lions Club district president, Teachers Cooperative Society Director and DK Ex-servicemen Association Director.

High school teacher

Purandara Narayana Bhat K, science teacher at Vidyabodhini High School in Balila has been selected for the State-level best Teacher award. He has been serving in Balila School for the last 27 years.

Being a resource persons, Bhat is also preparing teaching aid and collecting articles and books related to science and education. He also prepares question bank, handbooks for teachers and has been creating awareness on biodiversity and rain water harvesting. He had won state-level best science teacher award in 2010. He had also won certificate of excellence on Science Day at Pilikula Science Centre. He had won district-level best teacher award in 2008.
