Gender bias and inequality grave, says Rijiju

Gender bias and inequality are “very grave” in the country, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said on Monday as he emphasised the need for a change in mindset towards improving women’s safety. 

Addressing the South Asian Women’s Peace and Security Conference here, he reminded that the efforts of the government, judiciary and police alone will not be sufficient to curb the menace. He said crimes against women as a result of a deep rooted social problem and that a country cannot claim to progress where women are not safe in the society. 

“It is not a question of man or woman, it is a matter of humanity. The community, family members must be sensitised, the cause and the solution to this issue is also within each of us,” the minister said.
