Bamboo rice an added attraction at the four-day SHG exhibition in Mangaluru

The four-day exhibition of products manufactured by members of Self Help Groups, organised by the Karnataka State Women Development Corporation (KSWDC) and Women and Child Welfare Department at Kanthi Church Hall near Mangaladevi temple was inaugurated here on Tuesday.

The exhibition had an array of products like pickles, pappads, ‘sandige,’ juices, dress materials, one gram gold and bags manufactured by various Self Help Groups and women entrepreneurs.

Varieties of pickles and squashes produced by various Self Help Groups, ayurveda products like ‘kashaya powder for kidney stone,’  pain releif oil, gooseberry syrup and many more were dislayed at the expo.

Bamboo rice

Kudingila Grameena Naturals from Kasargod displayed bamboo rice. Speaking to Deccan Herald, a representative from Kudingila Grameena Naturals said the rice is procured from Madhya Pradesh and there  is a good demand for the rice in the coastal districts. The bamboo rice is enriched with medicinal value and contains zero fat. It is also effective in controlling diabetes, joint pain and cholestrol,” he stated.

“The 100 grams of bamboo rice contains 60 grams of carbohydrates, 265 kilo calories energy and zero fat. About five grams of bamboo rice should be added with the regular rice. It can also be consumed on empty stomach with water,” he added.

Sahana from Uchila who was exhibiting artificial jewellery comprising ear rings, chains, bracelets said she visits different places exhibiting her products.

The phone covers, door mats prepared by the children of Mobility Training Centre for Blind were also on display. Speaking after inaugurating the expo, Corporator Premanand Shetty said that there is a need to provide marketing facilities for the products prepared by the members of the SHGs.

Women and Child Welfare Department Deputy Director Sundar Poojary said, over 3,500 women entrepreneurs have availed the benefits of the expo and have become successful entrepreneurs.

Mayor Jacintha Vijay Alfred, Kanthi Church priest Rev Prabhu Raj, Development officer Chandrika were present.

The expo will be open for public from 10 am to 8.30 pm.
