The police suspect sand and granite mafia in Sunday’s attack on Chamarajanagar Deputy Commissioner A M Kunjappa. Fifteen people, among them history-sheeters and flunkeys of former gangsters, have been arrested so far.

Five cases have been registered with regard to the case and 11 more people have been detained for questioning, Superintendent of Police Kuldip Kumar Jain told reporters here on Wednesday. He suspected sand and granite mafia behind the incident.

Kunjappa suffered minor injuries when his car was pelted with stones near Gundlupet Circle here on Sunday night during a flash protest by lorry owners. They were protesting seizure of granite-laden lorries by the police. The protest turned violent and the deputy commissioner’s was targeted.

Although Kunjappa didn’t lodge any complaint, the police decided to investigate the matter on their own, Jain said. He further said the police had taken strict action against illegal transport of granite and that vested interests had hatched a conspiracy to disturb law and order.

A total of 40 people are said to have been involved in the attack and the police have identified all of them. The prime suspects — Akbar, Tabrez and Younis — are absconding. Two special teams have been form to trace them, he added.

He insisted that he wasn’t under any political pressure and said that no innocent would be framed.
