Man kills father over property fight

He also murders daughter-in-law, another family member with a cleaver

A dispute over ancestral property between two brothers turned so violent that one of them attacked their father and two other family members with a cleaver in east Delhi’s Nand Nagri on Friday night.

While the senior citizen and his daughter-in-law were killed, his grandson sustained multiple stab wounds and is battling for life at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.
The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Yusuf, 70 and Shamina, 35. Shamina’s 17-year-old son Janbaz was injured in the attack.

Police have arrested the attacker, Yusuf’s youngest son Mohammad Shamshad. Shamshad’s elder brother, Zulfiqar, is absconding.

“Zulfiqar fled the moment Shamshad took out a cleaver and began attacking his family members. Shamina was Zulfiqar’s wife,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Veenu Bansal.

On being questioned, other family members told police that the two brother fought over a share in the money the family had got after selling their ancestral property at their native place in Uttar Pradesh. The plot was sold for Rs 7 lakh, but the money was in Zulfiqar’s custody. While Shamshad wanted his share in the money, neither Zulfiqar nor their father was paying any heed to his constant demands.

Arrested
A Delhi Police officer said the incident came to fore at around 10 pm and Shamshad was arrested from the house. The weapon was also recovered from his possession. “Zulfiqar has criminal history and his name is listed in the record of habitual criminals at Nand Nagri police station,” Bansal added.

On Friday, Shamshad was having an argument with Zulfiqar and Yusuf when he took out a cleaver to attack them. When Shamina tried to save the two, Shamshad attack her while Zulfiqar escaped from the house. Seeing Shamina being attacked, her son and father-in-law tried to overpower Shamshad. But Shamshad stabbed them as well.

“Yusuf, Shamina and Janbaz were rushed to GTB Hospital, where Shamina died during treatment late on Friday night. Yusuf succumbed to his injuries on Saturday evening,” Bansal said. The condition of Janbaz is stated to be critical.

A case of murder and attempt to murder has been registered against Shamshad with Nand Nagri police station.
