Delhi move on cars likely to lead to corruption: SIAM

Last Updated 09 December 2015, 17:30 IST

The recent move by the Delhi government to allow private vehicles on roads on the basis of odd and even number plates is likely to lead to a lot suffering and corruption, according to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

“A lot of corruption is likely if the rule is implemented. Also, people who have only vehicle are likely to suffer. However, if it is done from 8 am to 8 pm, it could be good,” SIAM deputy director general Sugato Roy said.

According to Roy, the government should look at other options in order to decrease pollution. “First of all public transport needs to be augmented. The Delhi government has not bought a single bus after the Commonwealth Games,” Roy said.

According to Roy, the government should also look at augmenting the Metro network as a recent study had indicated that only 16 per cent of the pollution was from cars.
