A 12-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being stabbed by his father in east Delhi’s New Ashok Nagar on Wednesday.

Culprit Nipen Haldar has also tried to set his son on fire, police said.
Nipen lives with his wife Ashwati and son Ankit at a rented house in New Ashok Nagar D-Block.

“Nipen often comes home after consuming alcohol and misbehaves with family members,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) B S Gurjar.

In her statement, Ashwati told police that he came home drunk around 9 pm and started abusing her when told to stop drinking. Nipen was then involved in a heated argument with her.

“Their son tried to intervene which infuriated Nipen. Ankit was attacked with a knife kept in the room,” Gurjar added.

The boy suffered multiple injuries in the chest and collapsed there. Nipen then attempted to set him on fire, but failed to do so as Ashwati cried for help.

Nipen ran away from the spot with the knife after which Ashwati and their neighbours rushed him to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital. Ankit is undergoing treatment and his condition is stated to be serious.

Their neighbours told police that Nipen regularly abused and beat up his wife under the influence of alcohol.

“Nipen is an alcoholic who used to abuse his wife in front of their son,” another police officer said.

On Wednesday, Nipen was also heard saying his wife and son needed to be a taught a ‘permanent lesson’ for their behaviour.

Ashwati approached police after Ankit was admitted to the hospital. A case of attempt to murder under the Indian Penal Code was lodged with New Ashok Nagar police station. Police arrested Nipen on Thursday morning.
