A woman has donated the eyes of her 22-year-old daughter who died in a car accident in west Delhi’s Rajouri Garden area last week. Rupali was killed while three others, including her younger sister and brother, sustained serious injuries.

Rupali’s mother Monica told Deccan Herald that a surgery was conducted at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. “The eyes will now be used for donation at AIIMS,” she added.

Monica is a social worker, who has been working in the field of organ donation. “My work is often discussed in the family. Rupali used to say that she will donate her eyes after death,” Monica said.

It was a tough decision as all the family members are shattered over Monica’s death. “We still wanted to fulfil her wish,” Monica added.

Rupali lived with her family at Arihant Nagar in west Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh. She died after the car collided with a Delhi Metro pillar in Rajouri Garden on January 20.
The incident occurred when Rupali was returning home along with her siblings Nivita and Aditya, and friend Pooja from a wedding ceremony.

“They had left home in the evening to attend the wedding of a friend’s sister in Gurgaon,” Monica said.

Aditya was driving the car while Rupali was sitting on the passenger seat. Nivita and Pooja were sitting on the rear seat.

According to police, Aditya was speeding and lost balance over the wheels. He rammed into a Delhi Metro pillar due to which the car’s front portion was badly damaged. Police suspect that the incident occurred due to a tyre burst.

The occupants of the car were taken to DDU Hopsital, where Rupali was declared brought dead. Nivita and Pooja are still undergoing treatment in the ICU. Their condition is stated to be critical.

“Aditya sustained fractures in his legs,” Monica added.
A case of rash driving and causing death by negligence has been filed against Aditya with Rajouri Garden police station.
