Fast bowling great and Pakistan coach Waqar Younis on Thursday mourned the demise of ex-New Zealand batsman Martin Crowe. He recalled Crowe as a complete batsman and best player of reverse swing.

.
“I heard this sad news about Martin Crowe’s passing away this morning. A great friend and my condolences to his family. He is a legend from New Zealand. I am probably one fast bowler, who has played a lot of cricket against Martin. A complete batsman, an institution and great player to watch for youngsters. It is a great loss to family, nation and great loss to me as he was a superb friend,” Younis told reporters on Thursday.
His compatriot Wasim Akram had called Crowe the best player of reverse swing and Younis couldn’t agree more.

“I think, Wasim probably was talking about 1991. He came over and scored a couple of centuries. He became the highest run-getter from New Zealand in 3 Tests. On a green top against us, he managed so beautifully against reverse swing, which was a new phenomenon in those days. Deliveries coming at that pace, I felt he managed it beautifully. I think probably he is one of the best batsman who negated reverse swing,” Younis said.

Younis recalled Crowe as great human being. “There are lot of fond memories of playing days and even after that. A year before his cancer was detected, we had done commentary together in a Pakistan vs New Zealand series. He was a great human being. He had vast knowledge about the game.”

Later before the India-UAE match, a minute’s silence was observed in the memory of Crowe. Incidentally, his brother Jeff Crowe was the match referee for the match. He saluted the graphic of Martin while leaving the ground. Players from both sides wore black arm bands as a mark of respect for the departed soul.
