KPRS seeks support price for arecanut, coconut

essing the protesters after inaugurating the day and night protest organised by the KPRS District Unit to demand support price for arecanut and coconut near Deputy Commissioner’s Office here on Monday, Reddy said that the arecanut and coconut growers in coastal region are forced to sell their produces at a very less price.

Hence, the State government should announce suitable support price for arecanut and coconut. Similarly, the Central government should withdraw the free trade agreement, he urged.  The agriculture policies of State and Central governments have led farmers in the nation to an economic crisis.

Farmers in the nation, who obtained loans from various banks, are forced to commit suicide, Reddy said.  Government should announce support price of Rs 125 per kilogram for arecanut, Rs 7 per one coconut and Rs 50 per kilogram for copra (dried coconut), he added.

Senior advocate Muliya Keshavaiah, senior farmer Muruva Ramakrishna Bhat, CPIM District Secretary B Madhava, KPRS District Secretary K Yadava Shetty, leaders K R Sriyan, Krishnappa Salian, Vasudeva Uchila, Sukanya, Srinivas Alva and B M Bhat were present.
