The National Service Scheme (NSS) is likely to be included as an elective subject in the undergraduate courses from the next academic year.

NSS Regional Director A N Pujar said here on Monday that the University Grants Commission (UGC) had approved a proposal submitted by the NSS directorate in this regard . He was in the city to take part in a national seminar on ‘Revisiting NSS — A Strengths, Weaknesses Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) Perspective,’ organised by the University of Mysore.

Pujar said that all undergraduate colleges, including those offering professional courses, should set up NSS units. He said that there were five lakh NSS volunteers across the country and the number is expected to go up in the coming years.

“Karnataka government has accorded priority for the NSS by earmarking Rs 80 crore for the scheme,” he said.
