A lawyer has filed a complaint with the Upalokayukta against the Circle Inspector and Station House Officer (sub-inspector) of the Madikeri Town police station for not invoking section 306 of the IPC (abetment to suicide) in the case of unnatural death of DySP M K Ganapathi.

Amrutesh N P complained that officers at the Madikeri police station “succumbed to pressure and failed to discharge their duty”.

“As soon as the news of the suicide was aired on July 7, several TV channels also telecast the interview of Ganapathi, which was recorded hours before he took the extreme step. In that interview, the DySP has named Minister for Bengaluru Development K J George, senior IPS officers A M Prasad and Pronab Mohanty. It is the station house officer and the inspector who have succumbed to the pressure of higher officials and helped the abetters get away. Under these circumstances, the public servants named by the deceased DySP misused their power and ensured that the FIR does not include section 306,” the complainant said.

Another advocate, Ranganath Reddy, has filed a PIL in the High Court, urging it to order the state government and the Director General of Police to register an FIR against George, Mohanty and Prasad for “driving” Ganapthi to suicide.

The court is yet to hear the matter.
