State Safai Karmachari Commission Chairman Narayana said the government is planning to regularise the services of 3,500 civic workers in local bodies soon.

Speaking to media persons after a meeting here on Friday, Narayana said, “I have received several complaints about contractors harassing the civic workers. At several places, the civic workers are being paid Rs 5,800 per month instead of Rs 9,800 fixed by the competent authority. I have spoken to the authorities concerned to set right the problem,” Narayana said.

The authorities concerned and contractors should understand the problems faced by the pourakarmikas in service and take measures to solve their problems, he added.

“The civic workers should be paid an additional amount of Rs 300 as washing allowance and Rs 500 as risk advance. The minimum wages of the workers has not been revised for the past 15 years. It should be revised, at least, once in five years, he said.

Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) Administrator H Jaya said, “Of 125 sanctioned posts of cleaning staff, the MIMS has filled up 100 posts.”
