The first incident occurred on Monday when the constable was killed by a Qualis being driven by another policeman’s son, who panicked, abandoned the vehicle and fled.

Mohan Mungshe (50) was a constable with the Local Arms Unit 2 at Worli. The absconding driver, 22-year-old Amit Bhandare, is a Worli resident and the son of an assistant sub-inspector. Mungshe, who lived in Prabhadevi, was on his way to work when he was knocked down near the MTNL office building.

“A Qualis came at great speed, hit Mungshe from behind, crushing his torso and damaging all his vital organs. It then crashed into an electricity pole. The driver panicked, locked the jeep and fled on foot,” said a Worli police officer. Mungshe was declared dead at KEM Hospital.

“We have gathered that the driver of the vehicle, Amit Bhandare, is the son of an assistant sub-inspector and lives in Worli area. However, when our officers reached his house, he was not there. We suspect he is hiding somewhere and we are conducting inquiries,” said senior police inspector Bharat Worlikar.

Police suspect Bhandare had borrowed the vehicle from a friend. There were three others inside the Qualis along with Bhandare.

“Soon after the mishap, Bhandare fled the scene while the rest were brought to the police station and questioned,” Worlikar said. Bhandare’s three friends were not found drunk. “We will nab Bhandare soon,” Worlikar said.

At the Local Arms 2 quarters in BDD Chawl, policemen gathered to bid their last respects to Mungshe who leaves behind his wife, two daughters and a son. The constable’s body was taken to Satara in Western Maharashtra, his native place.

In the second incident, a drunk insurance company employee reportedly crashed into an 18-year-old youngster, killing him on Wednesday. The police have identified the victim as Panda Paswan.

After the accident, the culprit fled the scene abandoning the car on the spot. The driver’s documents, including insurance papers, were recovered from the car leading to the arrest of the accused.

The man was identified as 36-year-old Niranjan Shetty, who was arrested from Mira Road residence on the northern outskirts of Mumbai.

Shetty was driving home from a party when the accident took place. He was under the influence of alcohol, said Inspector Deepak Kathkade.
