SC notice to Centre, states on drug menace

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Union government and all states on a PIL asking to set up de-addiction centres and setting up mechanism to destroy the seized drugs.

A three-judge bench presided over by Chief Justice T S Thakur sought response from both the Centre and state on a plea by advocate Vineet Dhanda for steps to check drug addiction and trafficking in the country. “There needs to be changes in the procedure for the disposal of the drugs and psychotropic substances which are caught and seized by the authorities... The drugs seized by the authorities are stolen and re-introduced in the market and hence, such laws relating to destruction of drugs seized needs to be urgently introduced,” advocate J P Dhanda, appearing for the petitioner contended.
