With no breakthrough in the train heist case, the Railways on Thursday announced “suitable” reward for those who give information that helps to nab the perpetrators.

As the Railway Protection Force (RPF) does not have high-tech logistics to carry out inquiries, the case was handed over to state CB-CID. Police have suspected that the theft might have taken place in Chennai soon after the bogie, which contained boxes of money, was towed to the parcel office.

RPF DGP S K Bhagat said investigating officers have been unable to get a clue to crack down the case. “This is a unique crime. Once we pin down where the robbery took place, our job would be easy,” he said.

“Anyone who gives information or clue will be suitably rewarded,” Bhagat said. According to him, all scientific analyses are being done to ascertain what kind of equipment was used to cut through the roof of the train.

The CB-CID investigation wing has begun probing the case by conducting multiple inquiries with the railway and bank employees. ADGP (CB-CID) Karan Singh surveyed the Chettupattu yard, apart from visiting the Egmore station in Chennai. Adding to the woes of the officials, the CCTV footage obtained at various stations were not that clear since the train passed during the night and early morning.

“However, we got some clues from the grabs at railway stations between Salem and Chennai. We are going through them,” a senior official said seeking anonymity.
