NMP to become green port

Independence Day celebrated all over coastal city

The coastal city observed the Independence Day on Monday. Various government departments, agencies and educational institutions celebrated the spirit of freedom.

NMPT celebrated 70th Independence Day with the participation of  Ports CISF unit, Port Fire Service and the port’s schools.  NMPT Chairman P C Parida hoisted the national flag and recalled the sacrifice made by freedom struggle leaders to achieve freedom.

Speaking about different measures taken by the Union government and the NMPT for improvement Maritime Infrastructure, he said the measures shall give fillip to the EXIM trade. Under Sagarmala Project, the long-awaited Deep Draft Major Port work with modern infrastructure in Uttara Kannada is in progress. The Kulai Fisheries harbour under Sagarmala shall be a gift to the fishermen of the region, he said.

He said the mechanisation of cargo handling and container handling facilities shall bring investment of Rs 750 crore on PPP mode. Under the Ease of Doing Business programme of the prime minister, the Port Health Office and testing laboratory have been commissioned and it would reduce the transaction cost and time, he stated.

Parida said the NMPT has taken all steps to harness solar energy by installing 1.1 MW roof top solar plant and 4 MW solar plant in the port colony that shall meet 60% of the port’s power requirement by December 2016. The port is in the process of becoming a green port by 2017 getting its entire power requirement from the non-conventional energy resources, he stated.

Coast Guard

The Coast Guard Karnataka celebrated 70th Independence Day with a ceremonial parade and playing the national anthem at its headquarters at Panambur. Dy Inspector General K R Suresh, the Commander Coast Guard Karnataka, in his address, said that days like the Independence Day reminds of sacrifices made by great freedom fighters.

“We should all work towards the selfless service to the country. Anti-national activities, as and when noticed, should be reported and thwarted,” he said.

Corporation Bank The Corporation Bank celebrated the Independence Day at its corporate office in Mangaluru. Bank MD and CEO Jai Kumar Garg accentuated the significance of Independence Day.

He said that Independence Day is an occasion to remember the sacrifice made by the freedom fighters for the well-being of their fellow country men. He said independence in real sense is achieved only when the people get economic independence. Bankers play an important role in making the society economically strong and independent, he remarked.

Vikas College

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel called upon students not to forget the sacrifices of freedom fighters to the country. He was speaking at the Independence Day programme at Vikas College here on Monday.

Chairman Krishna J Palemar said the Independence Day celebrations should be meaningful. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream to make India free from poverty needs to be materialised. Students have to be a disciplined citizens as they are the wealth of this land,” he said. Shashidhar Alva, the chief of the hostel, was felicitated.
