Despite Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh asking security forces to avoid use of pellet guns, the number of injured who have received pellets in eyes has touched 500 in the unrest in Kashmir Valley.

Doctors fear that a huge number of these injured will have to live with life-long visual impairment. Hospital records reveal that nearly 500 people’s eyes have been pierced by pellets in a period of 38 days, inflicting grievous wounds that already have or threaten to render the affected eyes blind.

Pellet eye injuries continue unabated adding to the waiting list of surgeries at SMHS hospital here. At SMHS Hospital alone, 406 people with pellet injuries in eyes have been admitted till August 15; 27 among them had both eyes injured, while the number of those requiring surgical procedures on one eye is 431, as per the hospital records.
