A 23-year-old Northeastern student and an evangelist was assaulted by a group of five persons in Lakshmipuram near Indiranagar in the early hours of Thursday.

According to the police, the victim Thangpimang Kipgen, 23, a native of Manipur, had come to the city in 2012. He is a student at Agape Baptist Bible College in Kothanur. He is also an evange-list with Thadou Christian Fellowship Church in Halasur.

Around 1 am, Kipgen was walking back home after visiting a few of his friends in Indiranagar. As he approached his house in Lakshmipuram, around five persons stopped him and started attacking him. The miscreants fled the spot as a few residents came out when Kipgen raised an alarm.

Kipgen told DH, “Around 1 am, while I was walking, a person hit me on my face without any provocation. As I started running, he threw a stone at me and a few others joined him. I immediately called my friends and raised an alarm. As the neighbours came out, the attackers took to their heels. There were around five people but I could not figure out exactly who they were and why they attacked me as I was in a state of panic. We have filed a complaint at the Indiranagar police station.”

A senior police officer said, “The Indiranagar police have registered a case and efforts are on to trace the assailants. The attackers were speaking in the local language and are suspected to be from Lakshmipuram or surrounding areas.”

Meanwhile, the Thadou Students' Association issued a press release condemning the attack on evangelist Kipgen. They have requested the police to take action against the miscreants and also provide security to the general public, saying there was a rise in crime in and around Lakshmipuram.
