Tension prevailed in Periyapatna taluk in the district following the death of BJP worker Ravi (31) on Friday night near Magali village. Ravi’s family and BJP workers suspect the death to be a murder.

Ravi was found dead around 8.45 pm. He had sustained severe injuries on the head, and the two-wheeler by which he was travelling had been damaged. According to the police, prima facie, the death seems to be an accident.

The accident occurred when Ravi was on his way to Magali on his two-wheeler, after attending a peace meeting called by the Periyapatna circle inspector of police at his office, regarding Tipu Jayanti, police said.

They said Ravi had consumed alcohol at the time of the accident. Ravi was an active worker of the BJP for a decade now and had no criminal background. “We will investigate the case from all angles to find out the truth,” said the police.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Ravi D Channannavar visited the spot. He said a team led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Harish Pandey will investigate the case under the supervision of Additional SP Kala Krishnaswamy. After autopsy at KR Hospital in Mysuru, Ravi’s body was handed over to his family. The Periyapatna police have registered a case under IPC Section 302, based on a complaint by Ravi’s brother Swamy.

MP suspects murder
MP Pratap Simha, who paid his last respects to Ravi near the BJP office in the town, said that Ravi’s death was a “planned murder”.

“The mysterious death of party worker is condemnable and the police should investigate the case without any bias. Ravi was a well-behaved man and had no criminal background,” he said.

Some BJP workers staged a protest in Periyapatna, demanding that police conduct a thorough investigation into the death. Security was tightened in Periyapatna and Magali.

BSY links death to Tipu Jayanti
BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa has linked the “murder” of BJP/RSS worker Malagi Ravi to Tipu Jayanti celebrations, reports DHNS from Bengaluru.
In a statement on Saturday, he said Ravi’s murder was in line with a series of killings of activists belonging to pro-Hindu organisations. Ravi was murdered by miscreants who had been given a “free hand” by the Siddaramaiah government to deal with persons opposing the Tipu Jayanti celebrations, he charged.
