Special land acquisition officer Mahesh Babu on Friday said farmers who lose their land for highway work will be liable for compensation of four times higher the price fixed by the office of sub-registrars.

He was speaking to reporters after receiving objections to acquire lands for developing Tumakuru-Honnavar National Highway 206 that passes through Kadur in Chikkamagaluru district, into a four lane.

He said, “A notification in this regard was announced on September 4 itself to enable farmers feared of losing land to file objection.”

Packages
According to the proposal, the work on 215 km-long stretch of the highway that passes through Tumakuru, Gubbi-Tiptur-Arsikere, Kadur-Tarikere and Shivamogga has been divided into five packages.

Bypass road will also be laid on the outskirts of twin towns of Kadur and Birur that will connect the highway near Doddaghatta via Geddlehalli, Thimmapura, Thangali, Malleshwara, Uliganaru, Birur, Kavalu, Galihalli, Hanumanthapura and Jodithimmapura.

The farmers, who own houses, farm, borewells and also trees at the villages adjacent to the work site, may file objections. Every application will be disposed of on case-to-case basis.

The farmers will be liable for compensation of the price four times than fixed by sub-registrar offices, if the land is acquired according to the guidelines of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

MLA Y S V Datta, who was also present, directed the officers to ensure that there is no disparity in fixing compensation and do justice to all the farmers who will lose their properties, land or buildings for the work. He said the widening of the highway and bypass road are essential to offload the pressure of increasing traffic in the cities.
