Benami property law soon: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday made a renewed push for cashless economy in the country and slammed the Congress-led opposition for campaign against demonetisation.

Modi said people who cannot endorse action against corruption and black money were “relentlessly” searching for faults with his government.

The prime minister said the ‘anti-benami’ property law, “which lay dormant gathering dust”, will soon be operationalised to take care of those violating its provisions. The law came into being in 1988, but neither were the rules framed nor the law notified.

“We have retrieved it and turned it into an incisive law against ‘benami’ property. In the coming days, this law will also become operational,” he added.

Addressing the nation during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ monthly radio address, Modi noted that those opposing the fight against corruption were coming up with “new tactics everyday” to thwart the government’s efforts.

“I sincerely assure you that this is in no way going to be a full stop. This is just the beginning. We have to win this battle and the question of feeling exhausted or stopping simply does not arise,” he said.

Taking on his critics, Modi recalled that he described the move as “an extraordinary war” against corruption and black money on the day he announced demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

Modi said he was aware of the problems being faced by the people post-demonetisation.
