Private and deemed varsities top the rankings of universities released by the Karnataka Higher Education Council while the state-run universities occupy the second slot.

Private varsities top the ranking in three categories (Established, Young and New Universities) while government varsities top the list of specialist universities.

The ranks were allotted on the basis of a survey conducted by the Karnataka State University Rating Framework and the Higher Education Council. Minster for Higher Education, Basavaraj Rayareddi released the rankings on Friday.

Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, tops the list of Established Universities (those set up more than 10 years ago), while Gulbarga University, Kalaburagi, is ranked second. The jurisdiction of Gulbarga University extends to Kalaburagi, Bidar, Raichur and Yadgir and Koppal districts. City’s own Bangalore University has been placed fifth followed by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi. Mangalore University has scored the least points in the assessment.

Young varsities

Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara University, Mysuru, tops the list of  Young Universities (established between 5 years and 10 years). This is followed by Jain University, Bengaluru.

Among the universities established less than five years ago, (Young Universities), PES University has emerged the topper.

Out of the 52 universities in the state, 42 were evaluated as part of the survey while ranks were allotted to only 38 varsities.

Yet to be released

The results for Karnatak and Kuvempu Universities are yet to be released. Several factors such as faculty strength, infrastructure, research work, inventions among others were considered while ranking the universities. The names of three state-run universities figure in the category of specialist universities. University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, tops the list of specialist varsities, followed by Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries University, Bidar. The University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, is ranked third.

Poor performance

A few other recently established specialist universities such as Kannada University, Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University have, however, performed very poorly.

The Karnataka Folklore University has scored just one point out of five for research and innovation.
