Couple paraded naked on 'Khap's' order in Rajasthan

In Rajasthan's tribal district Banswara, a couple was allegedly thrashed and then paraded naked in a village after a khap-like diktat was issued. As per the police a video of the act was also allegedly made and  circulated on social media.

Police said that the incident happened in Shambhupura village in Banswara where the villagers started assaulting Kachru (20) and his cousin on Sunday. Both were alleged in a relationship. Hence being an unacceptable thing in the society, police said that the villagers also stripped both the man and the woman following which they were paraded inside the village. Station House Officer at Kalinjra police station, Ravindra Singh told DH, "Both Kachru and his 18 year old cousin was in a relationship. They also fled to Gujarat, (which shares border with Banswara), but villagers brought them back and assaulted."

Police who also got to know about the incident through a video posted on social media reached the village on Tuesday. "After reaching the village we were able to spot the man, whom we brought to police station to record a statement," Singh said. The case has been registered against five individuals and around 10-12 unidentified people under relevant sections of the IPC and the Information Technology act.

However police said that they are still investigating the case and also arranged proper security for men and women in the village. Meanwhile they confirmed that the members of the village had put pressure on families of both the man and woman. "Family members have recorded a statement that a Khap Like order was issued by the villagers to teach the couple a lesson because they were in a relationship in spite of being cousins," SHO added. In the statement recorded in police station members of the family have said that they were helplessly watching their children, when villagers asked them to parade naked.

Police has also detained few people. However no arrest has been taken place till now. Also the man who sustained several injuries was  admitted in a government hospital in Banswara while the medical test of the woman has been conducted by the government doctors.
