Software aid for paired kidney donation

Last Updated 02 May 2017, 21:30 IST

The state government would soon acquire a software that would find matches between donor and recipient couples for paired kidney donation.

In a discussion organised by the Gift Your Organ, a voluntary organisation, Dr Michael Rees, CEO, Alliance for Paired Donation, said he would share a software designed by them to help the government carry forward kidney swaps or paired kidney donation on a large scale.

When a living kidney donor is incompatible with the recipient and enters into an agreement with another donor-recipient pair for exchange of kidneys, it is known as a swap.

Dr Rees told Shalini Rajaneesh, principal secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare, that the software would be provided to the government free of cost.

The software, based on the database of donors and recipients available on it automatically matches  suitable swaps and gives a better change to find a donor-recipient pair.

Shalini Rajaneesh said there is a need to take a relook at the existing laws to make kidney swaps easy. Only first circle relatives are eligible to participate in kidney swaps, according to the Live Organ Donation Act of Karnataka at present.
