The government has selected at least 250 prototypes of digital solutions developed by engineering students during the first-ever 36-hour-long non-stop coding contest to develop them further into utilities.

“Work to further develop these prototypes will soon begin. Students associated with these protoypes will also be involved in the process,” Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar said.

As many as 10,000 students sat locked in for 36 hours from 8 am on April 1 to 8 pm on April 2 and developed digital solutions through programming for a number of problems identified by the Union ministries in the final round of the Smart India Hackathon 2017.

The minister had launched the contest on November 9, 2016.  A total of 7,531 teams with 42,000 students took part in the initial rounds of the mega contest. Of them, 1,266 teams comprising 10,000 students from 28 states were shortlisted for the grand finale.

The winning teams, including those declared runner-ups, came up with innovative software solutions which could be developed further and used by many of the government departments, an official said.
