Deputy Commissioner Richard Vincent D’Souza on Tuesday sought the cooperation of LPG distributors for the successful implementation of Ujjwala scheme.

The recently launched scheme of the Central Government aims to provide free gas connections to women from BPL families.

Addressing a meeting of LPG distributors at his office here, the deputy commissioner wanted the distributors to ensure that the genuine beneficiaries avail of the benefit. With the implementation of the scheme, it is aimed to get rid of kerosene to make the state kerosene-free. Those in the rural parts possessing ‘Aadyata’ and ‘Anthyodaya’ cards will be benefited from the scheme, he added.
He also said that most of the tribals in the district are bereft of LPG connection.

K S Ramesh, manager of Devi Gas, apprised the deputy commissioner about the persisting demand for kerosene from the residents of line houses at coffee plantations. Such dwellers are cagey over obtaining even gas connection, and are also reluctant to pay towards the same.

He underlined that the scheme would be a success only when women is the head of the family as mentioned in the BPL card. In the case of otherwise, it would be difficult to bring such card holders under the scheme.

The deputy commissioner directed the distributors to set right anomalies in this regard and ensure that the scheme is implemented in the district.

Puttaswamy, deputy director of Food and Civil Supplies department, said that the Central Government will provide Rs 1,600 to every beneficiary, while the state will provide Rs 1,000 and a stove with two burners.
