Cong MLA wants grants to courts withheld

Last Updated 16 June 2017, 20:37 IST

Congress MLA K N Rajanna’s suggestion that the Assembly should withhold grants sanctioned to courts until a circular which bars legislators from sitting on the dais at inauguration of court buildings is withdrawn, received support from a few members.

Speaking during a discussion on the state budget proposals in the Assembly, Rajanna said in February several members had objected to the circular issued by the Registrar General of the Karnataka High Court but restriction on legislators continues. “In the budget proposals for 2017-18, Rs 731 crore has been allotted to courts. Why should we not withhold the grants? It will send a message that legislators cannot be taken for granted.”

The suggestion was welcomed by Kimmane Rathnakar, Shivamurthy Naik (both Congess) and S R Mahesh (JD-S).
